During the COVID-19 pandemic, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is operating a shower trailer in New York City for people who are currently experiencing homelessness. “We’ve seen some people who are newly homeless or some people who have chosen to leave the shelters because they worry about getting COVID-19,” says Renée Corbett, MSF water and sanitation manager. “They actually feel safer staying on the streets.” But the places where people would normally be able to wash themselves, such as recreation centers, are now closed. Access to hygiene services is key to preventing the spread of the new coronavirus, but underserved communities in the United States are having a difficult time protecting themselves and their families.
