Managing Editor, Web and Publications Development
The New York office of MSF is currently seeking a Managing Editor, reporting to the Director of Communications, to plan, coordinate and direct the development and packaging of a wide variety of compelling editorial content for print and online communications in collaboration with department heads and key staff members at MSF-USA in order to increase awareness of MSF’s activities and concerns, expertise and values among the general public, prospective field workers, current and prospective donors, the media, and others.
Current publications include: the MSF-USA website, annual reports, a quarterly newsletter, advocacy reports, a monthly electronic newsletter, podcasts, event invitations, advertisements, donor publications and newsletters, and other publications, as needed.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Communications team, and members of other departments, especially Program, Field Human Resources, and Development, to plan and implement MSF-USA’s multifaceted publication plans and editorial calendar, determining themes of issues and articles designed to keep public informed of MSF's programs, accomplishments, or point of view.
- Develops Editorial and Web Budgets for review by Communications Director, and monitors and implements approved budget. Oversees relationships with all vendors for diverse print and electronic publications.
- Develops, executes, and oversees production of content for MSF-USA public print, online and other publications, evaluates and establishes production schedules and solves publication problems to achieve stated objectives regarding message, look and target audience, within budget constraints.
- Participates in planning and implementation of MSF-USA’s communications strategies, policies and procedures.
- Constantly monitors field activities to appropriately represent MSF-USA in content
- Writes, edits, or assigns staff or freelancers to research and write articles, reports, reviews, and other material on MSF personnel, field projects and advocacy, as well as on the annual goals, activities and financial health of MSF-USA.
- Oversees all aspects of MSF-USA’s website, including content development; site design, structure, and functionality; vendor and budget oversight.
- Reviews quality of final print or electronic product before release
- Liaises with international communications colleagues on web, editorial and relevant content development platforms; this may include visiting key MSF offices and attending international communications meetings.
- Appoints, manages and evaluates team of 4 professional-level staff plus, volunteers, interns and occasional special project staff
- Delegates authority, consults with and guides staff to achieve goals. Provides ongoing feedback in a context of mutual respect
- Prepares and administers unit budget. Oversees relationships with all unit vendors
Requirements
- Minimum 5-8 years directly relevant work experience plus Master’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a developed focus and experience in conceptualizing and creating print, web, audio, and video content.
- Demonstrated knowledge of international affairs and humanitarian activities, combined with ability to synthesize complex and sensitive material accurately to produce articles for publication.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience managing graphic design and print production.
- Experience and ability to manage staff, including professional level staff with significant technical expertise.
- Experience managing budgets and vendors
- Ability to work independently, move projects from conceptual stages to launch, and handle multiple and often competing deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a creative team and work with the organization’s program, recruitment, and fundraising departments.
- Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF.
- Residence in or relocation to the New York City area
Preferred
- Experience working for a humanitarian aid organization and/or media outlet.
- Experience producing content from the field.
- Knowledge of French and/or Spanish
Starting salary range: mid 70’s to low 80’s, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits. Training opportunities and growth potential.
