New York, June 16, 1998 — Sheila Sinclair has been named Director of Development of the United States section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, the world's largest independent emergency medical relief organization. She replaces Sally Frank, who joined the organization in 1995.
Ms. Sinclair will supervise a four-person development team and oversee institutional, corporate, and private fundraising. Before joining MSF, Ms. Sinclair most recently served as a development and marketing consultant. Her clients have included the All-Star Talent Network, a youth violence prevention program; Body Positive, an AIDS outreach organization; and Children's Academies for Achievement.
Previously, Ms. Sinclair held such varied positions as Director of Planning and Development for Fletcher Asset Management, Inc., and Assistant Director of Major Gifts, at Harvard University. At Harvard, Ms. Sinclair became the fund raising strategist for the W.E.B. DuBois Institute, the nation's pre-eminent research institute in African-American studies.
Ms. Sinclair received her undergraduate degree from Harvard graduating magna cum laude. She continued her education as a Ford Foundation Fellow at Yale University where she received a Masters of Philosophy.
When asked why she was attracted to MSF, Ms. Sinclair replied with a quote from Cornel West, "A rich life is fundamentally a life of serving others, a life of trying to leave the world a little better than you found it." Ms. Sinclair has acknowledged that working with MSF will allow her to remain true to this belief.
MSF sends nearly 2,000 doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to over 80 countries throughout the world to bring medical relief to victims of armed conflict, disease, and natural and man-made disasters. Founded in 1971, the organization has offices in 19 countries.
