Following heavy rains and strong winds last week, the Solomon Islands were hit by flash floods and landslides. Two members of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team based in Papua New Guinea traveled to the capital Honiara on Tuesday, April 8, to conduct an assessment of urgent medical needs.
Approximately 10,000 people were displaced in Honiara, and are now hosted in 25 evacuation shelters throughout the city. Overall, some 50,000 people have been affected across the country.
Following its assessment and after discussions with the Ministry of Health, MSF will deploy a team in Honiara, including a medical doctor, a psychologist, and locally recruited nurses, to start providing medical assistance and mental health support to the displaced population through mobile clinics running in several evacuations centers in the capital.
